Salem Charitable Mechanic Association records, 1817-1935.

This Salem, Mass., charitable and self-improvement society was formed to provide financial help to members of the working class and elevate the status of mechanic laborers as a class. The administrative records include record books, membership lists, and a copypress letterbook containing the outgoing correspondence (1890-1908) of association secretary G. Arthur Bodwell. The financial records include account books (1819-1900) and dues books. The educational materials include addresses and lectures of John Russell and James Kimball, early association officers, as well as materials relating to the library established by the association. The records pertaining to Mechanic Hall include the building, operation of, and activities in the hall, as well as material relating to the two Mechanic's Fairs held by the association.
